Doug's Diner

Key: Highlighted purple = different sections of the menu

For our first breakfast outing, Emile and I visited Doug's Diner at the recommendation of Mr. Eastwood who has been living in Boulder since 1999. Mr. Eastwood shares our love of breakfast and has been eating at Boulder's best spots for 25 years! Doug's Diner is locally owned and operated since 2010. Owners Rick Bruening and Linda Hernandez pride themselves on local, fresh, and original dishes.

Location: 2574 Baseline Road, Boulder (other locations throughout Colorado)

Vibe
- down to earth feel
- It is not too fancy and it is the perfect spot for a relaxing breakfast in comfy clothes before a big day
- bring the whole family, a giant gum ball machine greets you at the front and there is even an opportunity for young artists to add to the colorful kids' art gallery wall.
- A large kids menu allows children to sample many of Doug's specialties at a fraction of the cost.

Menu and Options: Doug's selection is very large and has fantastic variety. There are quite a few omelettes to choose from or you can design your own. Each omelette can be made with three eggs (regular size) or two eggs (small size) and each one comes with a side of two items available daily. Doug's is also known for their "On the Border Grub" section which includes anything from breakfast quesadillas and burritos to chilaquiles (fresh fried tortilla chips, two eggs, chile, cheese, and protein) and huevos scorro (two eggs on top of corn tortillas with browns, refried or pinto beans, chile, and cheese).  In addition to a large "Sweet Stuff" section (that includes hot cakes, crepes, and Belgian waffles), Doug's has an entire selection of "Papas" which is a dish consisting of a mountain of browns or home fries, cheeses, and chile or gravy, topped with two eggs. While I didn't order the "Papas" I saw others with this dish and wow was it huge! With this in mind, Doug's offers "Whimpies" (half portion "Papas") for those who can't handle a full plate.

Don't miss item: The jelly and jam goes great with all things bread. Get the jam with anything that comes with bread - it's sweet but not too sweet!

Service and Taste: The service was relatively quick and no one's stomach growled waiting for the food. Mr. Eastwood's coffee came right away as did our waters. Based on Mr. Eastwood's recommendation, I ordered the "Basic" from the "Doug's Grub" section of the menu. This included 2 eggs, browns, 3 three strips of thick bacon, and a side of toast for $11.95. For me, the bacon was the standout of the meal as it was both juicy and crispy and had the perfect savory taste. Just as advertised, the strips were thick and large. Emile's favorite was the homemade jam that came along with the toast. Sweet and fresh, it was the perfect flavor combo. Mr. Eastwood agreed that the jam here should not be missed.
